Dear colleagues, 

 

On October 1, 2024, the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences is holding an international scientific conference on the subject “Left-wing radical movements and insurgent movements in Ibero-America in the second half of the 20th century.”

The ideas and practices of left-wing radicalism played a crucial role in the history of the states of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula in the period after the Second World War. The issues of economic modernization, social justice, war and peace were touched upon in theoretical works and resolved in the activities of political parties, social and international organizations of the radical left, which had lasting impact on the political situation of the region.

 

The topics under discussion during the forum will be: 

• Left-wing radicals in historiography

• The crisis of “orthodox” Marxism and the “New Left” in Ibero-America: ideology and political practice

• The role and significance of the Cuban Revolution in the formation of left-wing radicalism and insurgency movements

• Radical left movements in various countries of Ibero-America

• Left-wing radicals and right-wing dictatorships

• International organizations of the radical Left and regional movements

• From the Cold War to the Washington Consensus: the approach of the radical Left to the problems to the global world order

• “Left tide” in Latin America at the turn of the 20th–21st centuries.

• The legacy of the radical Left and the current situation in the left movement in the region

 

The participation is available both in person at the Institute offices (119334Moscow, Leninsky Prospekt, 32a) and virtually on the Zoom platform.

 

The languages of the conference will be Russian, Spanish, and English. 

 

Applications for participation with the full name, academic degree and occupation of the participant, accompanied by the title and brief abstract of the report (up to 1 thousand characters), in Russian, Spanish or English, are expected by September 1, 2024 at alekseymanukhin@gmail.com (contact person – Alexey A. The reports presented at the conference will be published in Latnoamerikanskii istoricheskii al’manach (Latin American Historical Almanac) after appropriate academic evaluation.
