The French intervention in the Rio de la Pla-ta in 1838–1840 in Russian Press

This article examines how the French intervention in the Rio de la Plata region (Argentina), between 1838-1840, was covered in the Russian periodical press. Attention centers primarily on "Sankt-peterburgskiye vedomosti" oldest official newspaper produced by the Academy of Sciences, and "Severnaya pchela", edited by renowned authors F.V. Bulgarin and N.I. Grech, publications that held a virtual monopoly over political news among privately owned papers. The main issue explored in the article is the dynamic nature of journalistic representation. The purpose is to reveal the characteristics of the reported content. The author came to the following conclusions. A distinctive feature of newspaper publications was their editors' commitment to providing objective coverage, addressing diverse topics related to the conflict, beginning with the causes of the conflict, placing them in the context of international relations of the time. News reports arriving from Europe were promptly disseminated through regular updates. Information presented was comprehensive and well-structured. Both opposing forces, France and Argentina, were represented. The information was not analytical and focused on the event aspect of the conflict. Neither did the articles attempt to justify French military actions nor frame the situation as part of Argentina's fight for national sovereignty. These newspapers represent valuable primary sources for studying the French intervention since such materials remain largely unexplored by historians.
