The Communist Party of Brazil and the War in Araguaia
In February 1962, a group of Brazilian communists who disagreed with the renaming of the Communist Party of Brazil to the Brazilian Communist Party held the Fifth Extra-Ordinary Conference of the CPB, which decided to reconstitute the party. In the polemics in the international communist movement that began in 1963, the CPB supported the Chinese Communist Party. After the 1964 coup, the CPB began to prepare for a protracted people's war. The Araguaya River basin, a rainforest area in the southeast of Pará state, was chosen as the starting place for the people's war. Preparations for guerrilla warfare continued for several years in deep secrecy. For 2 and a half years - from April 1972 to October 1974 - 69 guerrillas confronted an enemy force two orders of magnitude larger than theirs - and almost all of them died. Some peasants gave them passive support, but in general the guerrilla action in Araguaia was more in keeping with the concept of focoismo - the theory of the foco - than with the concept of protracted people's war. By the time of the Araguaia war, the urban guerilla in Brazil was nearly defeated, and the military dictatorship was able to concentrate far superior forces against the guerrillas in Araguaia, and to win by resorting to tactics of ruthless terror - against both guerrillas and peasants - and information blockade.
