AGAINST DESPERATION: MANUEL DE MIER Y TERAN AND THE NORTHERN BORDER OF MEXICO, 1825-1832
This essay focus on the figure of General Manuel de Mier y Terán and his zeal to preserve the integrity of the Mexican territory. In 1827, Mier and Terán was designed as chief of the Commission that had to establish the border limits with the United States. He explored the region and was aware of the danger derived from the growing penetration of American settlers. His letters, diaries and official reports give eloquent testimony of his continuous appeals and proposals to the Mexican government to attend a territory at risk. Political instability and scarcity of Treasury funds impeded to meet his demands, the loss of Texas was the indefectible consequence.
