The State, the "Indian question" and the protest movement of the Mapuche people in Chile (1990-2024)
The article examines the policy of the Chilean democratic governments towards the indigenous population of the country during1990-2024, analyzes the main stages and directions related to overcoming poverty, social exclusion, and weak politicalrepresentation of Native American peoples at the government level. It is noted that along with the implementation of the statestrategy for the formation of the foundations of a multicultural model, economic development and the inclusion of NativeAmerican communities in political and public life, there was a process of growth of protest sentiments, most pronounced in the movement of the Mapuche people. The increase in discontent was associated with a general disappointment in the activities of the state and the results of social programs, with the impossibility of joining the modernization process, resolving the issue ofconstitutional recognition and the return of historical territories. Instead of strengthening dialogue and interaction with the Government, the protest movement of the Mapuche people intensified throughout the 21st century, and became radical and violent. The deep conflict between the government and the Mapuche people has become a national problem at the present stage,and the search for ways of compromise and reconciliation has become one of the most important on the political agenda of the Government of the New Left and President G. Boric.
