Latin-American Historical Almanac

ЛIn 1927, nearly one hundred individuals were accused of being part of an international plot orchestrated by the Comintern. In Cuba, judicial processes against supposedly communists’ plots were nothing new. What was distinctive about Cause 967/1927, or Communist Cause, was that for the first time it was interconnected with an international repressive wave, and it involved members of Cuba's cultural avant-garde movement, mostly grouped in the Grupo Minorista. Despite its importance for the comprehension of the development of the Cuban cultural avant-garde and its links to concomitant repressive causes, this historical event has not been sufficiently studied by Cuban historiography. However, its study was made possible thanks to the discovery in the repository of the writer Alejo Carpentier of a dossier relative to his involvement in this repressive process, as well to the publication on line of various documentary collections. Therefore, the objective of this work is to unravel the Communist Cause and the role played by the young Cuban intellectuals, so that it was deemed appropriate to include them in this repressive legal process.
